Big Swing's photographic roots run deep. For years, principal Stephen Yadzinski has worked side by side with one of the world's most celebrated living photographers, Joel-Peter Witkin. Consulting with Witkin on a range of issues facing the photographer, whose complex tableaux often recall religious episodes or classical paintings and deal with such themes as death, corpses, and various outsiders, Stephen has helped refine the artist's complex photographic compositions and document his work. For Enfer ou Ciel (Heaven or Hell), a retrospective at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Stephen created a library of reproductions of the artist's original photographs.
Award-winning photojournalist Kristen Ashburn came to Big Swing as she, with the support of Madonna, embarked on the I Am Because We Are project. Big Swing agreed to donate imaging services, creating a catalogue of arresting and deeply compassionate photographs culled from Ashburn's work in Malawi and Africa over seven years. The photographs were used in a documentary film by the same name directed by Nathan Rissman and written and produced by Madonna.
